Im needing tan feet paws for a partial that I have. Sad thing is, I cant find any. So, I was wondering if there was a special paint that could be sprayed on a pair of black slippers that I own. I need the foot paws by June since I'll be wearing the partial to an animal shelter fund raiser. So if anyone has cheap tan foot slippers or know if I can paint over existing black ones, let me know. You're help is appreciated.Moodskies: busy

I'm considering making a pair of ears (and getting a fursuit commissioned) in the not - so - distant future, and I was curious what peoples' experiences with piercings through fur were. As my fursona is normally seen with a few earrings in her ears, I was wondering whether anyone has any tips about how to incorporate these into a fursuit or set of ears.

Created by the amazing collie_wing!! It was just too good not to share. :)
The first step to eradicating irrational fears is to own up to them. Er...I think? List ten fears that you have that really have no context whatsoever in real life. They don't have to be phobias, and they can be anywhere from nightmare-worthy to mildly disconcerting. If you don't have ten because you're brave, just make some up. You can explain them if you want, but you really don't have to.

I just learned a few months ago how to hand sew a back stitch. Yes, you may all gasp. But I've set myself to the task of attempting to create realistic ears and a tail to mimic that of a large spotted genet set in golden to brown tones.
So if anyone has any suggestions on pattern making as well as formation of the ears, the importance of foam, etc. I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm going to be wearing the tail and ears to Dragon*Con 2008 if I can get around to making them along with my latex muzzle and face/body paint.Moodskies: determined

I need Opinion on the ears and HELP with scratches on the eyes
|
May. 15th, 2008 @ 05:43 pm
|

|
more progress has been made since this shot such as trimming the fur better and lightly painting it to lighten it back up and i made the mesh blend better... i LOVE these eyes, they are hand-painted and the lenz is a plastic x-mas ornament...
Problem with EYES: now i have an issue w/these particular ornament eyes as they seem to scratch easier than any of my others. they came covered in very tiny very fine scractes....but now thanks to my carless-ness the one lenze has a small scuff and the other a 1 inch hair-line scratch. neither are noticable from a distance but up close and personal (like 1 foot away) you can see them... any one have an idea on how to fix it? like maybe rubbing clear glaze into the scratches? or a scratch remover? any one have an idea on how to prevent scratches like a brush on clear coat of sorts (clear spray does NOT work it frosts the globe even though it "super clear" paint) it bugs me how thouchy these eyes are.
Placement of EARS: lastly are the ears too far forward/ too close to the eyes? should i move them or leave it alone (moving it will be a pain as i'd have to remove the ear and build a support extenshion off the back of the head)

Fursuit 'Shirt'
|

|
Or, the upper half of a fursuit, so my character can technically run around shirtless but would still be 'furry'. =)
I'm still making the handpaws shoulder-length- the furred shirt would be short sleeved- but I'm wondering a couple things. I'm assuming I need a DTD for the project (easy enough). It'll have his white 'front', which will be a little bit of padded foam for his chest. Good thing I'm only 5'3" (less fabric!).
How much fur would it require? (I'm thinking half a yard is more than enough for the white part) Would I need a hidden zipper or just be able to pull it over? Would the 'shirt' wrinkle in weird places if I wore it? Am I getting in waaay over my head with this one or should I stick to painting a purple T-shirt and/or foaming/furring the white front part? Has anyone made a furred 'shirt' before? What's your experience if you have? Where can I get some good white fur? (preferably 2+" for the throat poof, I could trim it down to 1" for the rest of the front)

Thanks again, Zumzum |

Tool-Dip Question
|
May. 15th, 2008 @ 07:28 am
|

|
I read the (3) Memories on Tool Dip, but they didn't quite answer my question.
When using Tool Dip and plain ol' bought-it-at-the-fabric-store yellow upholstery foam, can you dunk the foam directly into the Tool Dip, or do you need to coat/seal the foam with something first? I know some chemicals and paints will eat through foam.
From what I've read so far, I'm pretty sure you can just dunk foam into the Tool Dip without any other preparation, but I'd just like confirmation before I ruin the carefully carved foam I just worked so hard on! o_0
Thanks!
EDIT:
Thanks everyone!
I have one additional question: Where the heck can you buy the stuff in Canada (Ontario)? Any of the kinds... Tool Dip, Plasti-Dip, Dip & Grip, Tool Magic, anything.
Yesterday I looked at a Canadian Tire, a TSC Store ("the incredible country hardware store") and a Home Depot and had no luck. The only place that had ever even heard of it was an older employee at CT who said they used to carry it but don't anymore. Canucks, where do you get yours?Moodskies: curious

help me choose my wings?
|
May. 15th, 2008 @ 01:44 am
|
|---|
|
I'm going to make a partial out of the crow head I made (icon), and I can't decide on what kind of wings to make. I know I want to have feathers that are stiff enough to keep their shape, different piles of furs, and feathers coming off my fingers so I can move them around and possibly grab stuff. I can't decide on what form I want them to be in, so I drew up my three ideas and was hoping for imput.
**EDIT** Thanks everybody! Since alot of people liked 2 and 3, and I STILL can't pick between the two, I'm just going to make wings that are somewhere in between them in length. 1 looked alot cooler in my head, but thanks for telling me it sucked :D

I would like to announce that I have joined the ranks of two new providers.

[ http://spiralunwinding.blogspot.com/ ] Please understand that this Blog is not intended to replace my Livejournal. I will still be posting here. However, I would like to focus on the Blog for documenting certain projects as they come up. I will, also, be attempting to post more frequently on the Blog. Rest Assured that any artwork I post there, will still be posted here. Just at delayed intervals.

[ http://spiralunwinding.deviantart.com/ ] I have been a member of dA since 2002. Twice, admittedly, I had a gallery hosted at the site. I left, came back, then left again, and now.. I'm back, and this time, I feel that I'll be extending the stay for a solid span. You can throw tomatoes for all the on-again off-agains, but hey, people CHANGE like the SEASONS. I recently paid for a subscription as well, and my userpage is in the process of being beefed up.
Keep an eye on these spots! I'll have it all linked together on my site once I finalize the layout for its new design (which is coming along rather nicely..)
Thanks for looking!

How to make handpaws with "fat" fingers?
|
May. 14th, 2008 @ 09:03 pm
|
|---|
|
Hey everyone! I haven't posted here in a looooong time because I haven't really been interested in costuming for a while. I am thinking of making a "doggy" suit. If I did, I'd want to make those "fat" looking fingers...you know, where the tips are wider, like a real animal's? I've seen tons of them like that but can't seem to find a guide. I'm assuming you either shape foam around your fingers and fur it, or just make the tips extra big and shove fiberfill in them. Any help and/or tips would be greatly appreciated. :)
EDIT: Found an example. This is from beetlecat's site. http://www.beetlecatoriginals.com/jalbum/hooves%20and%20paws/slides/redpaw1.html I might be looking for more of a "squared-off" look to the fingers but this is a pretty close example and I'm sure construction would be about the same.Moodskies: calm

well, its been a LONG time since i posted anything about my Mannoroth taur suit. i have been foaming like crazy, and slowly building up this giant suit. pictures courtesy of my dad for just now taking them, im still sweaty from the heat.
http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e255/Shaggy_Griffon/Mannoroth%20progress%20pics/
the tusks are hollow and made of fiberglass, the colors dont matter, its just the brands. i will paint those later, and they are not attatched to the head yet. the jaw is moveable with wide openings. great vision, i was surprized how well that turned out. the hands are made from someone's technique on foaming over fleece gloves from walmart, worked perfectly.
the body is made of 1" white foam, and its hollow inside but stuffed tight with packaging penunts and bubble wrap. the green back legs (which are hard to see ill get better pics of them later) are the 5" closed cell foam from joanns, very expensive. 1 leg cost about $28 dollars w/ a discount coupon. the torso part is just foam on a X-large sweatshirt from AcMoore. that strip of foam infront is the base line of the beer belly that this pit lord has. i will get to it later this week.
whelp, back to foaming, ill update again sometime!
catcha ya on the flipside, Shaggy Griffon 2008
PS: how can i fleece this? like duct tape pattern it ALL or is there a trick? i forget your name im sorry but the person who made the dark ixi taur suit, if you could comment on how you furred it, that'd be great. b/c i have no idea. |

First place winner, Kirin head for $100
|

|
i held a contest where one could submit art in the hopes of winning a head from me with a starting price of $100 rather than $300. the rule was it had to use the brown furs i had a surplus of of. the kirin took first place. the horn was $10 extra and the commissioner has also opted for the really realistic hand-made eyes like my goat has for $20. this is made with a baseball cap, a newly bought trashcan and plastic mesh. the horn is all foam and is very light weight. it is now ready for fur. (BTW that is a foam head mouted on a flowerpot via hot glue and ducttape...cheep but works)
this is made very similar to my goat head so i decided to post a pic of its start-to-finish picture for comparision to show how the mesh view ports and such looks/work

I just canceled my Time subscription. I'm now waiting anxiously for the refund they say they'll send if you cancel. The prompt that reminded me I'd been planning to cancel it was checking my account and seeing that it had auto-renewed, pulling money from my checking account that I didn't have and almost sending me into over-draft. *wince* Thankfully my bank gives me two numbers, a "current balance" and "impending balance" sort of thing, and it was in the "impending balance," so I managed to transfer money in from savings before it became part of the "current balance" and I was officially in trouble. I think I'm not in official trouble, anyway.
Along with what they pulled being five dollars over the amount I'd designated as my food money for next week (which is why it was almost an over-draft situation), my roommate and I had been talking for a while about how Time seems to have just gone down the drain. Not one big drastic thing, but... little things that, overall, make it less fun to read anymore. When she confessed that she, too, was no longer reading most of the articles, just the columns and reviews, I decided it wasn't worth it.
In other news, I've been reading The Arabian Nights recently. See, one of the boys in the Public Safety office with me one night had it for class. When he finished his reading assignment, I picked it up and started paging through, because I've never really read it before. I got halfway through before the shift ended and I had to give it back, and promptly went to order a copy off Amazon. Beth teased me about it when she heard, because in Romanticism class I've been making a list of all the things we've read excerpts of that I want to eventually buy and read in full, too. Off to the store to buy things for kitty! And cheese, since I ran out this morning and it is a rather horrible state of affairs to be without cheese.Moodskies: headachy Tuneskies: "From Now On" - Supertramp

I'm making a golden monkey partial for halloween and beyond. Her fur will match my hair for convenience, as her head will be mine, but with a latex make up job, get it? I need arms, legs and a long, poseable tail, and Ive found the ideal fur here: http://www.bearycheap.biz/ezimerchant/prod227.htm Can anyone help me with perhaps a commision or a little how-to magic? ...a cute little calico kitty~!
Well, okay, Beth didn't give it to me, she brought kity to our room to see if the roommate still had cat food. And she's not mine now, she's my roommate's; the roommate called her parents to get the okay and everything. She's still absolutely adorable. ♥ And I can feel my blood pressure drop every time I get up from my schoolwork to go pet behind her ears or rub her tummy.
Long story short: Beth saw her outside, didn't recognize her (and we know most of the strays on campus by now, given that we've been feeding them), leaned down to pet her, and felt her ribs. Little kitty must have been absolutely bewildered by the next sequence of events, because Beth promptly scooped her up, took her to Beth's room, gave her cheese and milk, and then cuddled her and slept for five hours. When Beth got up, she brought the kitty over to see about the cat food. We conferenced; the kitty is very people friendly, young, well-groomed, and most significantly has no fleas--but she's also terribly skinny, has no collar, and her breathing is really labored and she's sneezing constantly. We decided that kitty most likely was dumped here, since we're out in farm country, and I know that happens near the barn at home. And if she does belong to someone, they don't deserve her. >:O I mean, this cat is horribly thin. Beth called the nearest vet and left a message, and is hoping to get an appointment for tomorrow or Thursday. I'm going to go to the store and get kitty litter tomorrow afternoon, as this is an issue. And the roommate will eventually take her home.
The kitty explored my room, ate a bunch of cat food, drank some water, peed in my shirt drawer*, sneezed a massive ball of snot onto my bed**, fell asleep on the futon, and wormed her way straight into my heart before she'd even finished the exploring part. ♥♥♥ She is so loving, and she purrs whenever people even come close, and did I mention that she's cute?
*This is okay, because we then used the peed-on shirts to line the cardboard box we picked out as the litter box, and that convinced her to poop in there. Instead of in the shirt drawer again.
**This is also okay, as she's breathing a lot better now! :DMoodskies: happy Tuneskies: "Growing Strong" - Girl Scouts Greatest Hits

Pet hair and Fursuit commissions...Allergy concerns....

so i have pets, many pets. i myself am very allergic to guinea pigs and rabbits and we still have those but they stay out side (they come inside and i huff and puff, i touch one i break out in hives).
i like to have my cats keep me company out in my workroom but it was brought to my attention that customers could be allergic. so with concern that a customer may be allergic should i ban my cats and dogs from being in my workroom altogether? or should it be fine as long as they do not sit on the fur? would simply going over the costume with a shop-vac before mailing it be enough to remove any dander that may be ligering on the fabirc from having cats in the room? |
